Where to snowboard in China: the Olympic snowboard venue at Genting Secret Garden, Nanshan near Beijing, boarder-friendly Thaiwoo and the Altay mountains, including Koktokay's halfpipe.
China's terrain-park scene is small but real, and its centre of gravity is Genting Resort Secret Garden in Chongli, which hosted the snowboard and most freestyle skiing events of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Close to the capital, Nanshan in Miyun is where Beijing riders learn park, and Thaiwoo is the closest Chongli has to a boarder village. This post is a short field guide: where the parks are, who they suit, and where else Chinese snowboarders actually ride.
Genting, under the name Genting Snow Park, hosted the snowboard halfpipe, slopestyle, snowboard cross and parallel giant slalom events of the 2022 Winter Olympics, plus most freestyle skiing events. The one exception worth knowing: Olympic big air was held at Shougang in central Beijing, not at Genting. The Olympic legacy shows in the park culture and the events the resort hosts, and park features are rebuilt each season; check the resort's official channels for which features are open when you visit.
Of the resort's 35 runs, most are graded intermediate or advanced, and 5 lifts serve the mountain. Night skiing ran from 18:30 to 21:30 in 2025-26, so you can ride the lit runs after the day session. Of the three resorts in this post, Genting is the one a serious park rider should plan a trip around; see our Genting guide for trail details, lifts and booking.
Nanshan in Miyun is about an hour's drive from central Beijing via the Jingcheng Expressway, and it is the hill Beijing-based snowboarders ride on weeknights. It has 30 runs, 9 lifts, a terrain park and night skiing from 18:30 to 22:00. The park is smaller than Genting's, with lines of jumps and rails rather than Olympic-scale features, but the proximity to Beijing makes it ideal for learning park basics.
Getting there is the easy part. The high-speed train from Beijing Chaoyang to Miyun takes about 30 minutes, and the station is about 3 km from the resort; from there take a taxi or check whether a resort shuttle is running. Nanshan has also run a through-bus from the city with stops at Sanyuanqiao, Wudaokou and Ciqikou, but check the current timetable and fare before relying on it. The resort has rental gear and lessons, so many Beijingers learn park basics here. See our Beijing day-trip guide and the Nanshan guide for timing.
Thaiwoo is a ski village rather than a dedicated park resort, but it is one of the easiest places in Chongli to ride park and piste in the same day. Our resort data lists 31 runs and about 30 km of piste, split roughly 3:4:3 between beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain. For snowboarders, many of the intermediate and advanced runs follow natural fall lines that boards favour, and the village layout keeps the lift base, hotels and après within walking distance.
Thaiwoo has park features that are built up as the season gets going, but no halfpipe. We treat it as a boarder-friendly mountain rather than a park destination. Our Thaiwoo guide covers the resort in detail.
| Resort | Region | Park setup | Reachable from Beijing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Genting Secret Garden | Chongli, Hebei | Olympic snowboard venue; features vary by season | HSR to Taizicheng + resort shuttle | Serious park riders |
| Nanshan | Miyun, Beijing | Beginner-to-intermediate park, night skiing to 22:00 | About 30 min by HSR to Miyun, then about 3 km to the resort | Weeknight rides and learning park |
| Thaiwoo | Chongli, Hebei | Park features, no halfpipe | HSR to Taizicheng + resort shuttle | Park and piste in one day |
Beyond the three resorts above, a few options are worth a look:
The best park conditions usually come between late December and mid-February, after snowmaking has built a base and before spring softens the features. Avoid New Year (1 to 3 January) and the Spring Festival holiday around Chinese New Year (6 February 2027), the busiest and most expensive weeks. Park sessions tend to be quieter later in the afternoon, when day-trip beginners head home and the lift queues shrink. Check resort WeChat channels before you go: park rebuilds run on their own schedule and some features may only open at weekends.
Foreign snowboarders need the same paperwork and apps as everyone else. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly, install a map app such as Amap and the DiDi ride-hailing app, and use Trip.com or 12306 for trains. Bring your passport: you need it to buy train tickets and check into hotels. Our China travel essentials page has the full checklist.
