Genting Secret Garden: the Olympic park, open to all

Genting Secret Garden in Chongli: more than 30 runs, the 2022 Olympic snowboard and freestyle park, night skiing, with 2024-25 ticket prices and the train from Beijing.

Genting Secret Garden: the Olympic park, open to all

Genting Resort Secret Garden, called Yun Ding in Chinese and also known as Genting Snow Park, sits in the Taizicheng area east of Chongli town, in the Hebei district that hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics snow events. It is not the biggest mountain here and not a powder resort. It is the place to come if you ride a snowboard, want a compact hill you can lap for three days, or want one more run after the lifts stop.

The venue you can actually ski

Genting Snow Park staged the freestyle skiing and snowboard competitions of the 2022 Games (except big air, which was held at Shougang in Beijing), and it still trains national teams. It also keeps taking international races, including a FIS halfpipe World Cup in December 2025. The park features and competition courses on the trail map are the ones the Games were built on, not something added for visitors.

The numbers

  • Base elevation: 1,702 m
  • Summit: 2,100 m
  • Vertical: 398 m
  • Runs: more than 30 trails plus dedicated park courses, about 16 km of groomed piste
  • Lifts: 5
  • Terrain: beginner areas at the base, mostly intermediate groomers, steeper advanced runs, and the Olympic park

398 m of vertical is compact by Chinese standards, but that is the point rather than a drawback: you get to the top, ski a lot of ground, and come back down for noodles instead of spending the day on one lift.

Who each part of the mountain suits

Beginner

Like every big Chongli resort, Genting has beginner areas, and they are fine for a first day or two with a lesson. At weekends the easiest ground fills up first, so if it is your first time on snow, book a lesson before you arrive and come on a weekday if you can.

Intermediate

This is where Genting earns its keep. Most of the mountain is intermediate terrain, wide and well groomed, and the mountain is small enough that you can lap them repeatedly without the queue doubling.

Advanced and expert

The steeper advanced runs sit alongside the competition and park courses. Because the hill is compact, you can hit the steep sector in the morning while the snow is still hard and fast, then go back to it after lunch.

Snowboarders

The terrain park is the reason most riders come. Check whether park features are closed for training or a race before you build a day around them; national teams use the same ground.

Night skiing

A selection of runs is lit at night. In 2025-26 the evening session ran 18:30 to 21:30 on a separate ticket; the published 2024-25 night ticket was 165 CNY.

For a short trip this is the best value on the mountain: you ski a full day, eat, and go back up under the floodlights. It is also the busiest part of the day, so expect more people than in the morning.

What it costs

These are the 2024-25 prices published by Beijing Tourism, converted at roughly 1 USD = 6.7 CNY. Genting charged the same price whether you rented equipment or brought your own, which is unusual in Chongli and worth remembering when you compare resorts.

Adult half day, 4 hours22634

Prices moved sharply afterwards. In 2025-26 the rack rate ran from 580 to 710 CNY, while official-channel discounts were 288 to 468 CNY. The 2026-27 prices had not been published when we checked on 20 October 2026, so check the official channels before booking. Booking at the edges of the season and avoiding weekends is where the money is.

Getting there from Beijing

Train is the easy answer. The Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed line runs from Beijing North or Qinghe to Taizicheng in about an hour, and the free resort shuttle takes you from the station to the base. Our high-speed train guide covers booking with a passport.

By car it is about two hours from the sixth ring road on the Beijing-Chongli expressway. If you land at Zhangjiakou Ningyuan airport (ZQZ), it is roughly an hour and a half by car. In 2025-26, coaches also ran from both Beijing airports and Beijing South station for 80 to 100 CNY.

Two practicalities before you go. Many passports can enter China visa-free or under the 240-hour transit scheme, and entering at Beijing puts Hebei inside the permitted area, but rules differ by passport and change often, so check the current position on our China travel essentials page. Second, Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked in mainland China, so travellers use an international eSIM or roaming. Set up payment apps before you land.

Where to stay

The Genting Grand Hotel sits at the slopes with North and South Wing apartment blocks attached, so you can walk out in boots. Genting Star Youth Hostel is the budget option on the same base. For more restaurants, or to ski other Chongli mountains too, Thaiwoo town and Chongli town are a short shuttle ride away; our where to stay in Chongli page compares them. Taizicheng Ice and Snow Town, next to the station, works if you split your week between two mountains.

When to go, and what goes wrong

Weekdays from mid-December to early March are the sweet spot. Avoid New Year and the Spring Festival on 6 February 2027, when tickets and rooms cost the most and trains sell out early. The published season window runs from late November to early April, but exact dates change every year, so confirm them on our opening dates page.

Things that catch people out:

  • Wind. On a windy day the upper lifts can slow down or close. The lower sheltered runs are your plan B, and the night session is a good way to salvage an afternoon.
  • Taizicheng trains. Book them before the hotel; the station sells out first on holiday weekends.
  • Gear on the train. If you bring your own skis, book the 12306 snow-gear service, 68 CNY per set in 2025-26, instead of wrestling bags through the carriage.
  • Payment. Set up Alipay before you travel and carry some cash. Small shops and taxis around the base can still prefer cash.

Who should choose Genting

Choose it if you ride a snowboard, want a real Olympic park without leaving a China trip, have three days to put into one mountain, or want a night session to fill a short week. It pairs easily with Beijing, and our Chongli guide covers the rest of the district.

Look elsewhere if you want fresh natural snow. Chongli is cold and dry and its pistes run on large-scale snowmaking, so you ski firm, groomed snow under clear skies rather than powder. If long laps and big vertical are the goal, the hills either side are larger.

Quick answers

Can you ski the 2022 Olympic courses at Genting? Yes. The freestyle and snowboard venue stayed in public use after the Games, and Genting has hosted international races since, including a FIS halfpipe World Cup in December 2025.

Is Genting Secret Garden good for beginners? Yes for a first trip with a lesson: like every big Chongli resort it has beginner areas. Most of the mountain is intermediate, though, and the easy ground gets busy at weekends, so it suits skiers most once they can link turns.

Does Genting have night skiing? Yes, on a selection of lit runs. The 2025-26 evening session ran 18:30 to 21:30.

How much is a lift ticket? The published 2024-25 day ticket was 319 CNY, about 48 USD, and the night ticket 165 CNY. Prices rose after that, so check the official channel for 2026-27.
