Thaiwoo Ski Resort Guide: Chongli Village, Mixed Groups

Thaiwoo in Chongli has the area's most complete village: 510 m vertical, a roughly 30/40/30 beginner/intermediate/advanced split, train access, tickets and stays.

Why Thaiwoo

Thaiwoo sits in the Taizicheng area of Chongli, the Hebei district that co-hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics, and it has the most complete ski village in the area. Six gondolas and chair lifts serve the mountain, with 510 m of vertical from a 2,160 m summit down to a base at about 1,650 m. Published run counts differ between sources and seasons, so we do not quote one here; check the resort's current trail map. The terrain splits roughly 30% beginner, 40% intermediate and 30% advanced, so two or three skiers of different abilities can spend the day on the same mountain without splitting up.

This is the Chongli resort to pick when the group is mixed and the day should include more than just skiing. Thaiwoo town sits next to the base, with restaurants, bars, cafés, an ice rink and a hot spring, and accommodation that runs from a Hyatt Place and a Marriott Element to a youth hostel.

For background on the area, our Chongli guide lists the whole region and its resorts.

Slopes and lifts

Beginners are well served near the base, with a learning area, magic carpets and gentle green runs that make first days manageable. Intermediates will spend most of the day on Thaiwoo's groomed blue runs, which spread across the central part of the mountain. Stronger skiers take the black runs from the upper lifts. Stay on marked, open pistes: we do not recommend leaving the groomed runs without a qualified local guide, and closed areas are closed for a reason.

Night skiing has not been a regular fixture at Thaiwoo in the way it is at Wanlong, Genting and Fulong, so if you want an evening session, ask the resort before you plan around it.

Getting there by train

The fastest route for a foreign visitor is the Beijing to Zhangjiakou high-speed line to Taizicheng: about an hour from Qinghe, or about 1 hour 25 minutes from Beijing North. From Taizicheng, the free resort shuttle takes you to the village. If Taizicheng is sold out, ride to the end of the line at Chongli station and book a DiDi or a taxi to the resort. Book on 12306 or Trip.com, and bring the passport you booked with, because it is your ticket at the gates.

If you are bringing your own skis or board, check the current 12306 rules and book the snow-gear service where it is offered. In 2025-26 it cost 68 yuan per set on marked trains; the 2026-27 arrangement had not been published when we wrote this in October 2026.

Driving and air

China does not recognise International Driving Permits, so you need a Chinese driving licence to drive here. Residents with a Chinese licence should allow about 2 hours from Beijing's sixth ring road on the Beijing–Chongli expressway; the last stretch ices up at night. The resort has parking at the base. The nearest airport is Zhangjiakou Ningyuan (ZQZ), about 1 hour 30 minutes by car, used mostly by domestic flights. Most international arrivals fly into Beijing Capital or Daxing and continue by train or coach.

Prices and tickets

Beijing Tourism's 2024-25 listing gave Thaiwoo's weekday day ticket as 299 yuan without rental, 339 yuan at weekends and 375 yuan on weekdays with rental gear. The 4-hour half day was 209 yuan on weekdays, and a 2-day pass was 449 yuan (509 yuan at weekends). In 2025-26 the resort's rack rates were higher, at 443 yuan on weekdays, 590 at weekends and 756 on holidays, while discounted prices through the resort's official channels were often much lower. Rented gear carried a 2,000-yuan deposit that season.

2026-27 prices had not been published when we checked on 20 October 2026, so confirm on the resort's official channels or Trip.com before you book. Bring your passport when you collect tickets.

For a broader look at costs, our budget guide converts Chinese prices into USD and explains the seasonal pattern.

Where to stay

Three options, in the order foreign visitors typically choose:

AreaAccess to the liftsWho it suits
Thaiwoo town hotels (Hyatt Place, Element and others)At the base, a short walkCouples, families, anyone wanting a full-service base
Apartments and smaller inns in the villageAt the baseGroups of friends, longer stays
Taizicheng or Chongli townShuttle, taxi or DiDiTravellers prioritising price, or skiing several resorts

International-brand hotels are the most likely places to find English-speaking staff and to take foreign credit cards. Apartments are roomier and often cheaper for groups. For lower prices, look at Chongli town; our where to stay in Chongli guide maps the bases for all four resorts.

Eating and evenings

The village has bars, cafés and a range of Chinese restaurants, and the international hotels serve Western food. After the lifts close, the ice rink and the hot spring are the main things to do; check opening hours locally, as they were not published. English menus are rare outside the international hotels, so a translation app with camera mode is the most useful tool you can carry. Payment is mostly by Alipay or WeChat Pay, so set them up before you leave and keep some yuan as a backup, as explained in our apps guide.

A few practical tips:

  • Eat early on busy weekends, when the village restaurants fill quickly after the lifts close
  • Screenshot restaurant and hotel names in Chinese to show taxi drivers and staff
  • Bring hand warmers if you plan to walk around the village in the evening

When to go

The 2025-26 season ran from 7 November 2025 to 23 March 2026. The opening date for 2026-27 had not been announced in October 2026; check our opening dates page and the resort's official channels closer to the time. New Year and the Spring Festival are the busiest periods, with peak prices; Chinese New Year's Day 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, and the official holiday lasts roughly a week. Chinese school winter holidays start in mid-January, and Chongli fills with Beijing weekenders every Friday to Sunday. Weekdays in December outside the New Year break, and weekdays in March, are usually the quietest and cheapest. Our cold weather guide covers layering and lift-line comfort.

Family notes

The village layout works well with children: short walks, food at a range of prices, and an ice rink that gives non-skiing parents something to do. The base has a ski school. English-speaking instructors may be available, but we could not confirm it, so ask the ski school over WeChat or email well before you arrive. A translation app and a few screenshots in Chinese cover most other situations.

If you are weighing Thaiwoo against its neighbours, one trip can take in Thaiwoo, Genting and Wanlong, since free shuttles link each of them with Taizicheng station, and Fulong is a taxi ride away in Chongli town.
