Three of China's strongest natural-snow resorts: Beidahu's 870 m of vertical, Songhua Lake next to Jilin city, and the Wanda resort at Changbaishan, now on a high-speed line. Access, rime ice and visa rules.
Jilin province, in China's northeast next to North Korea, combines cold, natural snow with resorts that are big by Chinese standards. Jilin City's January average low is -20.8°C. The province's 2025-26 season launch, held with the 31st Jilin Rime Ice and Snow Festival on 22 November 2025, counted five national-level ski tourism resorts, and Songhua Lake, Beidahu and others opened to skiers on 15 November.
Beidahu, 56 km from Jilin City, hosted all the skiing, snowboard and biathlon events of the 2007 Asian Winter Games. Its main peak, Nanlou Mountain, is about 1,405 m, and the maximum vertical commonly cited is about 870 m. It is the choice for strong skiers. Songhua Lake sits on Daqing Mountain just outside Jilin City, with forest cover above 95%. It is now run by China Tourism Group and branded CTG Songhua Lake, so do not search for the old Vanke name. For 2025-26 it had 2.3 million m² of skiable area and more than a million visits. Its closeness to the city makes it easy to combine with sightseeing.
The Wanda Changbaishan International Resort, near Songjianghe in Fusong County, has 43 trails over about 30 km, nine of them advanced runs built to Olympic competition standard, and a base village with resort hotels. Club Med also operates in the Changbaishan area. Nearby, Changbaishan Huamei Shengdi (formerly Luneng) has 15 gentle trails and an 11 km cross-country trail, good for families.
Changchun Longjia airport has international flights from Seoul-Incheon and some Southeast Asian cities. In 2025-26 two airport buses ran from 15 November to 31 March: T979 to Beidahu in about two hours for 80 yuan and T989 to Songhua Lake in about two hours for 60 yuan, with tickets on the WeChat account 吉林市机场巴士 or at the arrivals hall. Their return for 2026-27 had not been announced on 20 October 2026.
For Changbaishan, the Shenyang-Baihe high-speed line opened on 28 September 2025. Beijing Chaoyang to Changbaishan takes as little as 4 hours 33 minutes and Shenyang North 1 hour 53. Use Changbaishan West station, renamed from Songjianghe in March 2025, for the Wanda resort; Changbaishan station serves the North Slope scenic area.
In January and February, vapour rising from the unfrozen Songhua River below the Fengman dam freezes onto the trees along the river in Jilin City overnight, coating them in rime ice. Go early in the morning. Changbaishan's Heaven Lake, a crater lake at 2,189 m on the North Korean border, is ice-covered from about mid-October to mid-June; check winter access to the scenic areas before you go.
