Taking Skis on China's Trains: The 12306 Snow-Gear Service

China Railway's 68-yuan snow-gear slot on Beijing to Chongli trains: how the booking works, which stations joined in 2025-26, and passport checks.

What the snow-gear service is

China Railway's snow-gear service (雪具便利行) lets you book a place for a pair of skis or a snowboard when you buy a high-speed train ticket, so you are not left wedging the gear into a crowded aisle. In the 2025-26 season it cost 68 yuan per set, it is booked in the 12306 app, and the gear has to come in under 200 cm measured as length plus width plus height. Participating stations ran a dedicated channel where the gear was checked and labelled before you took it on board with you.

The route explains why it exists. The Beijing to Chongli line ends inside the Chongli cluster, where Genting, Thaiwoo, Wanlong and Fulong sit, and peak-season trains out of Beijing are full of people holding boards while the racks go to luggage. The charge is per set for the whole run, so plan around 68 yuan rather than a per-bag fee that turns up later.

Treat it as a seasonal arrangement. When we checked in October 2026 the 2026-27 arrangements had not been announced, and seasonal add-ons do not always come back. Search 12306 for the season you are actually travelling.

How the slot works in the booking flow

The service arrived in two steps, which matters when you are checking whether a train on your date is eligible:

  • 7 December 2025 - gear booking opened on the G services.
  • 15 January 2026 - the arrangement was extended to the peak-season D services.

Eligibility depends on the train, so check that the gear option appears for your departure in the booking flow before you commit. In the app the slot is added inside the normal ticket booking, and you do not need a separate bag ticket.

At the origin station the gear is verified and labelled at the dedicated channel, and it then travels on board with you rather than being sent separately, so you take it off the train yourself at the other end. Nothing published says how long the check takes, so leave slack if you are connecting on. The high-speed train guide covers the rest of that run.

Does a snowboard fit the slot

The 200 cm limit is measured as length plus width plus height for the set, and that adds up faster than most people expect. A typical adult board of around 155 to 160 cm in a padded bag already comes to roughly 200 to 215 cm once you add the bag's width and depth, which is at or over the limit. Most ski sets, with poles and a bag, are over it as well. No published description breaks the measurement down per item, so measure your gear packed in the bag you will actually travel with. If it comes out over 200 cm, check the current 12306 rules for oversize items before you travel; oversize gear may have to be consigned separately rather than carried on.

The service is written for skis or a snowboard. Boots and helmet appeared in none of the descriptions we read, so carry those as ordinary luggage. Whether bindings come off, and whether a strap set counts, are worth a question at the counter.

Which stations took part

For 2025-26, eight stations:

StationChinese nameNotes
Beijing North北京北Main city departure point
Qinghe清河A city station further north
Badaling Great Wall八达岭长城Getting off around Badaling
Donghuayuan North东花园北Check-in point en route to Chongli
Huailai怀来Check-in point en route to Chongli
Xiahuayuan North下花园北Check-in point en route to Chongli
Taizicheng太子城Genting, Thaiwoo and Wanlong. Wanlong ran a free shuttle of about 15 minutes
Chongli崇礼End of the line, beside Fulong

That list is one season's snapshot. Stations come and go between seasons, so search by station in 12306 for the season you are travelling rather than a list posted last year.

The passport problem foreigners hit on 12306

12306 has an English website and an English app. You register with your passport, then verify your identity online with a photo of the passport or at a station ticket window. Foreign bank cards and mobile wallets are accepted, and you can change or refund tickets online for a fee.

The step that catches foreigners out is the identity check, and the fix is timing. Most people leave it until the airport or the night before, which in practice means queueing at a station window with a departure time already on their ticket. Do it at home, carry the passport you booked with, and keep the booking reference offline. If a card does not go through, Trip.com sells the same tickets for a small fee. Our China travel essentials page has the full setup.

The Harbin to Yabuli equivalent

Northeast skiers get a different set of options. High-speed trains run from Harbin West to Yabuli West. In 2024-25 a conventional train, K5197, ran from Harbin to Yabuli South.

RouteTypeLast confirmed fareArrival
Harbin West to Yabuli WestHigh speedCheck 12306About 25 minutes' drive from the slopes
Harbin to Yabuli SouthConventional, K5197 in 2024-2549.5 yuan500 m from the slopes, 2 hours 15 minutes

The two Yabuli stations are not interchangeable, and the names do not make that obvious: West is a car ride from the mountain, South is the conventional station you can walk to. The 68-yuan slot we found belongs to the Beijing to Chongli line, and nothing we read extends it to Harbin, so plan to carry your board on the northeast trains unless 12306 shows a gear option for your route. Our Harbin and Yabuli trip post has the rest of the transfer picture.

Is it worth using

If you own your skis or your board, your packed set measures within the limit, and you are spending three days or more in Chongli, it is worth booking. 68 yuan is less than most rental days, and a reserved place for the gear is easier than hoping for rack space.

If you are renting, leave it. Rent at the resort, where staff can set your bindings and dial the fit into the actual hill, and travel with a bag you can lift into a rack yourself. Our renting gear guide covers how the shops work.

The practical benefit shows on the busiest trains. A Friday evening peak train out of Beijing is the hardest one on the line to ride with a board, and a confirmed gear slot means you are not improvising with it in the vestibule. Add it when you buy the ticket, because peak trains sell first.

Quick answers

What is the 12306 snow-gear service? 雪具便利行 is a China Railway add-on that reserves a place for skis or a snowboard on a high-speed train; the gear is checked and labelled at the station and travels on board with you. It cost 68 yuan per set in the 2025-26 season, for gear under 200 cm in combined length, width and height.

Does a snowboard fit the slot? Not always. The limit covers length plus width plus height for the whole set, and a typical board in its bag comes to roughly 200 cm or more, so measure it packed. If it is over, check the 12306 rules for oversize items.

How do foreigners book trains on 12306? Register with your passport, then verify your identity online with a passport photo or at a station ticket window. Foreign cards and mobile wallets are accepted, and Trip.com sells the same tickets for a small fee if a payment fails.

Is it running for the 2026-27 season? Confirm in 12306 for yourself. The 2025-26 arrangements were still unannounced for 2026-27 when we checked in October 2026. Check the gear option for your specific train, and note that participating stations change between seasons.
