Going into 2026-27 the entry rules, mobile payments and the snow calendar all shifted for foreign skiers. What is still undecided and where to check.
Three things matter for visitors this winter: the visa-free rules, foreign cards on mobile payments, and the rhythm of how China opens its ski season. None is dramatic on its own, but together they make planning a trip in late 2026 or early 2027 different from a year earlier.
This post covers what we know as of late October 2026, what is still being decided, and where to check again before you book.
For most non-US passports, the headline rule is unilateral 30-day visa-free entry. The list covers around 50 nationalities. The UK and Canada were added in February 2026; Japan and Korea joined in late 2024; most of Europe and Oceania have been on it since 2024 or earlier. A few neighbouring countries also have separate mutual visa-exemption agreements, so check the rule for your own passport. The general scheme runs until 24:00 Beijing time on 31 December 2026. No extension into 2027 had been announced on 20 October 2026, and only Russia's separate arrangement has been carried into 2027.
If you are weighing a January to March 2027 trip, do not assume the 30-day rule continues past the cliff. Either wait for an announcement, use 240-hour transit if your passport qualifies and you are flying on to a third country, or get a visa. Country rules and how to file the arrival card are on our China travel essentials page, and the opening dates page keeps the season ahead of you.
Both apps began letting foreign users link Visa and Mastercard in 2023. In March 2024 the central bank raised the per-transaction limit for foreign-card holders from US$1,000 to US$5,000 and the annual cap from US$10,000 to US$50,000. WeChat Pay charges 3% on foreign-card payments over 200 yuan. The first 200 yuan is free, and Alipay is reported to apply the same rule. New cardholders also get the 3% waived for 60 days on payments under 1,000 yuan. Your own bank may add a foreign-exchange fee on top, so check before you top up.
What this means at a ski resort in 2026-27: most resort mini-programs, ski-school counters and food halls take Alipay or WeChat Pay QR codes. Large hotels take foreign credit cards, but we could not confirm that lift-ticket counters accept Visa or Mastercard, so plan to pay for passes through a wallet app. A ban on refusing cash has been in force since 1 February 2026, so any sales point that takes cash must accept it; carry some yuan as a backup. Set both apps up at home. Real-name verification with your passport is usually fast but can take 24 hours or more, and you need your home phone number for the SMS code.
Snow arrives in a reliable pattern. Altay in the far north-west is first: Koktokay usually opens in mid-October (in 2025 it started snowmaking early in the month and opened on 12 October), and its season can run into May. Jikepulin at Hemu typically opens later, around late November to early December. Exact 2026 opening days depend on the weather, so check the resorts' official channels before you book. The northeast follows: Yabuli near Harbin and the Jilin resorts (Beidahu, Songhua Lake, Changbaishan Wanda) usually open in early to mid November. Chongli and the Beijing hills come last, partly because so much of their terrain is machine-made. Most Chongli resorts open in late October to mid November, the National Alpine Skiing Centre in Yanqing in late November, and the smaller Beijing hills (Jundushan and Nanshan) open in late November to early December. Full terrain is rarely ready on opening day, so mid-December is a safer start for a real Chongli trip.
| Region | Typical first lifts | Typical last lifts | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Altay, Xinjiang | Mid-October (Koktokay) to early December (Jikepulin) | Mid-April to early May | Longest season, dry powder, very cold (Altay City January low about -21 °C) |
| Northeast (Heilongjiang, Jilin) | Early November | Late March to early April | More natural snow, brutally cold afternoons, ice-festival cities nearby |
| Chongli (Hebei) | Late October to mid November | Late March to mid April | Machine-made, firm and groomed, easiest base to reach from Beijing |
| Beijing hills | Late November to early December | Late February to mid March | Small, snowmaking-heavy, fine for an afternoon or a night session |
Xinjiang runs on Beijing time but everyday life runs about two hours later. Allow an extra day's transfer and consider a night flight or train from Urumqi if you can. Our Altay guide and Chongli guide pages go into the side-by-side detail, and the best ski resorts in China page lets you compare them.
Three crowd peaks shape the winter. New Year (1 to 3 January) and Spring Festival are the largest. Chinese New Year's Day in 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February (the Eve is Friday 5 February). The official Spring Festival holiday (roughly a week) is usually announced late in the previous year, and both the run-up and the holiday itself fill Chongli and the indoor halls. Chinese school winter holidays also start around mid-January, which keeps weekends busy from then until the festival. In Altay, local schools held their first winter "snow holiday" from 1 to 5 December 2025, and the resorts drew more than 150,000 visits in that one week. No dates for a 2026 snow holiday had been announced in late October 2026, so watch for one if you plan an early-December Altay trip. The quietest windows with good snow cover are weekdays in the first half of January, after New Year, and the first three weeks of March.
